Updated: Jun 16, 2023

So you just published your book, and now the goal is to get eyes and ears on your work. Marketing a book can be a challenging task, but it doesn’t have to break the bank. There are a number of ways to promote a book, we just have to get creative!

Below are some ideas on how to market your book for free:

  • Leverage social media

  • Create a blog

  • People love free stuff

  • Book review websites

  • People love more free stuff

  • Build an email list

Leverage Social Media

Social media is a huge advantage for authors. Between Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Pinterest, and YouTube there are multiple outlets to build a platform of followers. Pick the platform that hones in on your strengths. Are you great at talking in front of a camera? YouTube subscribers want to hear from you! Are you witty and creative when using your words? Twitter followers and Facebook friends want to repost you! These platforms have a variety of ways for you to showcase your book, creativity, and personality. Your followers will continue supporting your work and will be the first in line when you publish that next book!

Create a Blog

Blogs are a fantastic way to build a niche and write about topics similar to your book. Readers of your blog will be attracted to the content, and want to hear more from you. Using your blog, like leveraging social media, is another way to build a niche following. Blogs are a way to show your personality, quirks, and all the great things about you! Readers love to feel connected to the author, so showing off who you are as a person and author will drive people toward reading more of your work.

People Love Free Stuff

Offering a sample of your book gives the readers a snippet of what your book has to offer. This builds trust between the author and the reader and channels reciprocity. People love receiving free stuff, and in return, they may feel more inclined to repay the favor by purchasing the rest of the book. You showed you could provide them value with your book, and in return, they pay you for that.

Book Review Websites

Reviews, reviews, reviews! GoodReads is a popular book review website where readers have the opportunity to share their thoughts on their favorite books. A handful of raving reviews will help increase the number of eyes on your book. People like to hear about the experiences of others to get a feel for if the book will be a good fit for them. There is no shame in asking for reviews. On social media or during a great conversation about your book, asking for a review will increase the chance of your reader sharing their thoughts on review sites.

People Love More Free Stuff

Hosting a giveaway on your social media or website is a great way to build trust in your readers and increase the interest of others in your work! In exchange for an entry into the giveaway, you can receive emails or build your follower count which will increase the audience towards your book and future work. Book giveaways can lead to more sales in the long run by generating reviews, building an audience, and increasing word-of-mouth marketing.

Utilize Email Marketing

Email marketing is a great way to keep readers engaged with you and be the first ones notified of a new book or product. Email marketing often helps authors boost sales by promoting the latest releases and giving your followers exclusive offers. Through your email list, you have the ability to create email content that keeps your readers engaged with your work and excited for your next release!

There are a number of ways to gain visibility on your book. Leverage the methods that align with your values and strengths as an author. There is no right or wrong way to market your book.
